The purpose of this second installment in a series on the Medicare physician pay system is to drive home the seriousness and scope of the issue. It is also to offer some tangible steps physicians and others can take to shore up their defenses.

No matter what your political persuasion or what part of the medical community you occupy, the pay system is a problem. As the cost of business rises, Medicare physician pay is due to plunge 21.2 percent this year and cumulatively 40 percent by 2016 without Congressional intervention. This would have a devastating financial impact on physicians. Almost no business can have its income reduced by 20+ percent and still remain viable and prosperous.
